Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) was built more than 200
years before Bangkok, Thailands capital and in its 20 acres, not
only houses the famous 15 metre high, 46 metre long gold plated
Reclining Buddha, but has the largest number of Buddha images in
the whole of Thailand.
Wat
Pho is the centre for Thailands first university and is also famous
worldwide as a centre for training in traditional Thai massage.
It is here I am proud to have graduated in 1994 and now regularly
visit on request, to assist the monks to train other students in
their regular Thai Massage courses. Much of the stone walls at Wat
Pho were inscribed with all that was known about Thai Massage dating
from the reign of King Rama III.
What would have been written before, was lost when the Burmese destroyed
and burned Ayuthaya (the Thai capital before Bangkok).
Thai massage is also available daily at Wat Pho from the monks and
no visitor to Bangkok should leave without experiencing the magical
relaxing power of this unique therapy.
